Georgetown, Penang
Still here.
“Opened 12 March 2020 — four days before Malaysia's lockdown.”
The beginning
I opened this bar on March 12, 2020. Four days later, Malaysia shut down.
The bottles were organised. The ice was ready. I'd been getting ready for months. Then the world closed and it didn't matter.
That part wasn't resilience. I just didn't know what else to do. So I kept going.

“I didn't open this bar at a great time.
I opened it at the only time I had.”
The real reason
I started bartending in 2018. I was going through something. Standing behind a bar was the only place I knew how to be still.
When I opened this place, it wasn't really about the industry. It was more personal than that. I needed somewhere that felt like mine.
That's not a great origin story for a business. It's just the honest one.

“I built a bar to feel less alone.
And then I ran it alone. Every single night.”
The people who found us
When people could come in, they did. They'd find their way through the bookshelf, sit down, and tell me things — what they wanted, what kind of week they'd had.
I'd make them something. We'd talk. Sometimes a long time.
The people who found this place during those years became something more than regulars. They became the reason I stayed.

Asia's 50 Best Bars
We went to Hong Kong for the 10th anniversary ceremony. Carried the Penang flag on the red carpet. Not because we won anything. Because we're proud of where we're from.
What it is
One bartender.
No menu.
Behind a bookshelf.
There's no menu because I don't want to hand you a list. I want to ask you what kind of night you're having.
I run the bar alone because I always have. No staff. No manager. No one to hand off to when the shift ends.
When I say it's home, I don't mean it the way bars usually say that. I mean it was home for me first — somewhere I came when I didn't have anywhere else to put myself.
Some people find that strange. Most people come back.
